GIOVANNI E. SCHIAVO (1898- ): Born in Sicily; Living in Texas.

This chapter profiles Italian American historiographer Giovanni Ermenegildo Schiavo, who was born in Sicily, Italy in 1898. Schiavo came to the U.S. at age eighteen, having completed high school in his native city of Trapani, Sicily. He has contributed to newspapers, magazines, and reference publications, including the Encyclopedia Americana. His forte, however, has been the history of the Italian-Americans. Were it not for his efforts, much of our knowledge of the contributions of these people would have been lost. In many ways, this book, itself, has been easier to write because of the basic, extensive research accomplished by Schiavo.
