Abstract

This chapter profiles Enrico Caruso, an Italian American tenor born in 1873 and died in 1921 in Naples, Italy. Before coming to the U.S., Caruso had studied voice for several years with Guglielmo Vergine and Vincenzo Lombardi. In London, New York, and many other famous cities, he sang in French and Italian operas: La Boheme, Othello, Les Huguenots, Carmen, Rigoletto, Aida, Tosca, and many others.At the Metropolitan Opera House, he sang over 600 times, and was the audience's favorite opening-night tenor for sixteen years.
