Abstract

Thus, in Karlowicz's view, the air catastrophe at Smole'nsk revealed that the Polish state, as ruled by the Civic Platform party with Tusk at its head, was like the eighteenth-century Russian "Potyomkin villages" - unable to respond, nonexistent in fact. Karlowicz compares the mob that tried to ridicule those who stood there in prayer to the mob in Zygmunt Krasi'nski's I The Undivine Comedy. i The comparison is right on target: revolutionary mobs destroy but are unable to build. Karlowicz argues that for most of its written history Poland regarded itself, and was regarded by others, as a country whose roots go back to Latin Rome. [Extracted from the article]
