Abstract

The material study of works of art is increasingly accepted as a field of investigation promising new directions for research in art history. Thus, it is not clear that the Morgan sketchbook originally began, as it now does, with "Christ as I auctor i , writing on a scroll", as Fowler asserts (p. 73, 76, fig. 60). Fowler illustrates it with an opening of a parchment palimpsest, the I Codex Moneus i (fifth/eighth century) (p. 12, fig. 10). According to Fowler, while in Venice, Dürer "adopted a new technology known as I carta azzurra i , or blue paper" (p. 84). [Extracted from the article]
