Abstract

This article highlights issues and topics discussed at the 66th annual convention of the Southern States Communication Association of the U.S. held in Memphis, Tennessee from March 27 to 31, 1996. Close to 500 attendees at the convention reported having an enlightening, educational and, in some cases, inspirational experience. The theme "Teaching Styles, Research Strategies, and Service Activities: An Eclectic View" drew participants and attendees from all four regions of the state. Spotlight programs brought exceptional quality to the program. Dick Morris, major advisor and engineer for the re-election campaign of U.S. President Bill Clinton, discussed the type of messages needed to elect someone and gave insight into the communication consultant's role in that process. Another spotlight, developed by Tyrone Adams of the University of Arkansas in Monticello, Arkansas, looked at the ever-changing and ever-growing role of the World Wide Web in the communication discipline. The use of the Web for individual students and organizations was discussed, allowing attendees some insight into how helpful the Web can be to the field of communication. Enrico Pucci from the Pennsylvania State University and John Bakke from the University of Memphis developed a two-part spotlight program utilizing the Civil Rights Museum.
