Abstract

Another opportunity for circularity involves integrating the current pork supply chain with alternative protein markets, including cell-based animal protein, in a sharedresource arrangement that supports both types of production, because both types of production rely on live animals. E ach year, approximately 200 million pigs are produced for consumption in the U.S., yielding 12.5 billion kg of pork products. Animal production and cell-cultured meat production require many of the same inputs, creating potential for combined systems in which total food production can increase while adapting to changing markets and consumer preferences more rapidly than either system could alone.
