Abstract

The article reports on the political crisis in Georgia following the arrest of Nika Melia, leader of the opposition party United National Movement (UNM), in February 2021, and its possible effects on the country's democracy. Also cited are how Melia's arrest affects U.S. President Joe Biden's focus on human rights as foreign policy, and the roles played by UNM founder Mikheil Saakashvili and the ruling Georgia Dream party founder Bidzina Ivanishvili on Georgian politics.
