Abstract

Cites a study conducted by researchers from Taiwan, which found that cigarette smoking but not areca liquid chewing increase the formation of micronuclei (MN) in buccal mucosal cells. Utilization of the micronuclei from exfoliated buccal mucosal cells; Investigation on the clastogenic effects of areca quid chewing and cigarette smoking, as well as the interaction between the two; Collection of salient personal characteristics; Demonstration of a significant positive trend for the relationship between MN frequency and either daily cigarette consumption or cumulative smoking pack-years.
