Assessing Young Children's Language and Nonverbal Communication in Oral Personal Narratives.

The article presents the discussion on language being foundational to children's literacy learning and development. Topics include assessment criteria containing demonstration of phonological awareness, knowledge of content, and structure of language; containing the assessment of social purposes of language and nonverbal communication; and containing an abundance of cultural and cognitive resource or funds of knowledge for children's language, literacy, and conceptual learning.
