Abstract
- Strategy is derived from the Greek strategia, meaning generalship. Clausewitz (1976) wrote the classic military strategy. The widespread use of the term in business occurred after World War II, although businesses, in particular the Pennsylvania railroad, employed strategy in the nineteenth century. Zinkham and Pereira (1994) suggest that the notion of strategy was first introduced to the management literature in 1944 by von Neumann and Morgenstern in their classic work on the theory of games, which essentially focused on situations of conflict.
