Abstract

The division of household labors is related to subjective well-being of both men and women. Generally, sexists are more likely to maintain the traditional division of housework that women are responsible for most housework. Egalitarians advocate the equal division of housework between men and women. Previous studies show that egalitarians report better subjective wellbeing than sexists. In this paper, Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) is used to examine whether such association is supported among the elderly in Mainland China in the context of urban-rural difference. The results indicate that egalitarianism is positively related to subjective well-being. Routine housework is positively associated with subjective well-being. Furthermore, the effects of egalitarianism on the subjective well-being for rural respondents are lower than their urban counterparts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
