Abstract

Last year, California passed its own privacy law to give individuals some control over how their personal information is managed. The law hasn't even taken effect yet and already new mandates are being proposed that run contrary to protecting consumer privacy. One proposal is Assembly Bill 161, which would ban paper receipts and require all retailers to have the capability of providing electronic receipts, thus forcing business owners to collect personal information to complete a customer sales transaction and then act as the safe keeper of that data.
