Abstract

This paper is dedicated to the black figure lekythos catalogued as inv. 7163 found in Grave 809. The grave dates to the Archaic Period on the Rifriscolaro area of the Camarina burial site. It is thought to be of Calcidean production, falling within the Phineus Cup Group. It is unique for both its form and decoration. A form that was previously unclassified in the field of Calcidean pottery production. It stands out for technically being well made and its singularly rare decoration. The contrasting polychromatic motif touches on rare and unusual themes, depicted in a distinct, eclectic and highly decorative style. The lekythos is discussed within the context in which it was found. Both the archaeological record from Grave 809 by itself, and the 1975 excavation of the site as a whole is taken into account. Some as yet unpublished documents from the site directed by Paola Pelagatti is presented. The paper rounds off with an updated plan of all the archaeological excavations of the Rifriscolaro Archaic Period burial ground. There is also a list of all published articles on Camarina (including its important finds) that have appeared in the Bollettino d'Arte in the past. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
