ARBEID EN SAMENLEVING, EEN ESSAY.

The article presents an essay on work and society. It gives a state of the art of the sociology of work. It discusses key concepts, points to their evolution and mutual relationships, and illustrates them with examples from Flanders. The article makes it clear that the leisure society might be proclaimed, but hasn't arrived yet. Work is still central to the society, not considering the changes in the content of work, the type of work, conditions of employment and working conditions. The study of the organisation of work, the labour market and the labour relations continues to be important, also for sociology. The article discusses these arenas and points for each to the tension between competition on the one hand, and solidarity on the other.
