Abstract
- "Eureka moments" may be a cliche in a town named for one, but Napa winemaker Mark Carter's chance discovery 40 years ago actually deserves the appellation. Then a young builder, Carter was browsing a Eureka thrift shop when he chanced upon plans for a San Francisco Victorian built in 1885 and destroyed in the 1906 earthquake. The five-bedroom Carter House he lovingly recreated in Old Town Eureka now serves as the cornerstone of a complex that includes the Victorian-inspired, 23-room Hotel Carter, opened in 1987, and three handsomely renovated cottages from the 1800s.
