Abstract

On the premise of distinguishing humans from birds, Zhu Xi's (...) elaborated Mencius' (...) thought on "Qi of the night" (...), which integrated his own reflection. In the aspect of human nature theory (...), he advocated that "W of the night" had the self-restraint function of preserving the mind, and he also pointed out that "W of the night" and "mind" (...) affected each other, which means that "mind" would be damaged by the daytime actions. This introduced the aspect of practice, that is to say, preserving the mind in the daytime actions. By holding on "mind", we can further realize the guidance and domination of "W of the night", and in turn, strengthen the self-restraint function of "W of the night" upon "mind". The investigation of Zhu Xi's interpretation of the category of "Qi of the night" may not only break his conventional view of attaching importance to "rationality (...)", but also reflect the position of (..., materials)" in his theory of mind cultivation (...). This provides an example for the further analysis of the importance of "rationality and Qi" (...) in Zhu Xi's thought and for the re-understanding of his system of rationalism.
