Abstract

The present study was undertaken to evaluate the severity of fatty liver in dairy cattle affected with fat cow syndrome. Whole blood, serum and liver biopsy samples were collected from 25 dairy cattle showing clinical signs such as anorexia, decreased milk production, debility and woody appearance. Out of 25 cows, 32%, 36% and 32% of dairy cattle had severe, moderate and mild fatty liver, respectively. Haematological examination did not show any significant variation between cows with fatty liver and control animals. Highly significant elevation of mean aspartate aminotransferase, Y-glutamyltransferase and significant elevation of total bilirubin and highly significant hypoalbuminemia were noticed in cows with moderate and severe fatty liver when compared to control group. Liver tissue samples were examined histologically and classified according to the severity of fatty liver. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
