Abstract

In a crucial step that may finally lead to the development of Block 37, key executives at Viacom Inc. have all but signed off on a plan to build a showcase television studio for WBBM-TV/Channel 2 on the vacant Loop parcel. Viacom has been negotiating since early last year with Mills Corp., the Virginia-based company picked by the city to develop the long-empty 2.7-acre site into a massive mixed-use complex. That would be good news for a site the city has struggled to develop since clearing it in 1990. Sitting on the southwest corner of the parcel, the television studio would look out on Daley Plaza, giving it the potential to generate the same sort of promotional buzz that Channel 5 has reaped.
