Abstract

In 2002, in Hungarian library education the area of study was renamed from library sciences to "library sciences and information technology". The author analysed the topics of the winning papers of the National Conference of Students doing Research (OTDK) in the period 1997 through 2015, whether they reflect the changes in the profession, and justify the relevance of this name change. The analysis covered essays from ten competition rounds of the bi-annual conferences. The author has been present at these conferences since 2007 both as a consultant professor and as an evaluator, so her findings are based on personal experience. The papers reviewed were classified into three thematic groups: 1) libraries and information technology; 2) traditional library activities; 3) historical papers. The titles of papers indicate a diversity and wide choice of topics. Besides traditional library themes new topics were added to the curriculum and specialized issues related to information science and technology came to the foreground. It was also found that the use of IT in libraries has become established in library education, and is in the focus of attention of students. It can be concluded that it was justified to change the speciality's name. In addition to presenting achievements, the author draws attention to some potential themes not yet covered, and offers a list of current topics waiting for research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
