Abstract

Whether they like exciting cities or beautiful countryside, people find many reasons to live in New York. In fact, each New Yorker makes more than 5 pounds of garbage, or solid waste, a day. Since people use most of the state's land, New Yorkers have a hard time finding enough places to put all that waste. One way to deal with some of it is to recycle. Recycling is collecting and processing garbage for reuse. New York law requires people to separate recyclable garbage, such as newspapers and glass, from nonrecyclable items. New York's solid waste problem is not going to disappear, but it is getting better. If everyone in New York tries to make less garbage, the state will be a cleaner, safer and more pleasant place.
