Abstract

This chapter analyzes the social reaction to treason within a pluralistic society, following the life imprisonment sentence passed on U.S. citizen Jonathan Jay Pollard for selling classified documents to Israel in 1984 and 1985. Social reaction to deviant behavior is determined not so much by an actual objective threat to the various parties involved, but by the different worldviews, priorities and concerns that existed long before Pollard's actions took place. The social reaction to treason highlights the different segments within the society and how they deal with a challenge to their boundaries and existence.
