Abstract

The article discusses public health case for prison-based needle and syringe program (NSP) in Australia. It cites that community-based NSPs in Australia have prevented 32,050 new cases of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and 96,667 cases of hepatitis C. It notes that people who inject drugs (PWID) represent majority of the population of Australian prisons, prompting the endorsement of prison-based NSP to address the deficit in harm reduction policy.
