Abstract

Konrad Zacharias Lorenz (pronounced "LOHR-ehnts") was born in Vienna in 1903. He was the younger of two sons born to Emma (Lecher) Lorenz and Adolf Lorenz. His father, the son of a harness maker, rose from poverty to become a wealthy orthopedic surgeon. Throughout his childhood, Lorenz was extremely interested in animals. He had many pets, kept detailed diaries of his observations on animal behavior, and nursed sick animals at the Schöbrunner Zoo in Vienna. Lorenz's early education was at a private school conducted by his aunt; afterward, he entered the prestigious and rigorous Schottengymnasium. When he finished high school, Lorenz wished to study zoology and paleontology, but he obeyed his father, who wanted him to study medicine. Lorenz studied medicine for a year at Columbia University, in New York City, and then returned to the University of Vienna to finish his medical studies. He recognized the relationship between areas of his medical studies and that of animal behavior, which remained his preferred research focus throughout his life. One of earliest papers described the behavior of the jackdaw, a crowlike bird, and was published in the prestigious German Journal of Ornithology. INSET: Konrad Lorenz.
