Abstract

U.S. landscape painter George Inness summarized his primary, lifelong quest. Inness' paintings remain captivating not only for their beauty but also for the many varied ways in which they express his quests for self-knowledge and for insight into the workings of the world. Evidence of these quests emerges in Inness' choices of subject matter, in his inventive arrangements of compositional forms and in his methods of applying paint. Inness' late landscape paintings, produced during the last fifteen years of his life, are some of the most challenging and inspiring contributions to the history of Western art. George Inness and the Visionary Landscape, to be held from September 17-December 28, 2003 at the National Academy of Design, New York and from January 24-April 18, 2004, at the San Diego Museum of Art, is the first retrospective of the artist's work in seventeen years.
