Abstract

In this work, a new approach to experimental study of cutting forces and heating in milling is carried out. Work is done without cooling, over type AISI 316L austenitic stainless steel, and a comparison between up-milling and down-milling is performed. Maximum values of cutting force (Fc), resultant force (R) or maximum temperature (Tmax) are used to obtain qualitative and quantitative analyses. The results show that major influencing determinant is not the instant undeformed chip thickness. This is significant if orthogonal turning models want to be directly applied to milling modelling.
