Abstract
- Various types of organizations are theorized as engaging in "development" work, some of which are intragovernmental, governmental, corporate, and nongovernmental. Organizations classified as nongovernmental are the most ambiguous; authors conceptualize different types of organizations into varying categories of analysis. The process of categorization of nongovernmental organizations by social scientists is important because it influences authors' conclusions about organizations' activities, values, and "impacts." Therefore, this paper is focused on providing an analysis of how social scientists conceptualize and measure all types of organizations that are not categorized as governmental or corporate, including nongovernmental organizations, nonprofits, social movement organizations, civil society organizations, volunteer associations, and others. The analysis effectively provides a summary of the literature that can then be efficiently critiqued in light of the growing importance of nongovernmental organization in world society.
