Abstract

Within the sluggish economy of the Mahoning Valley of Northeast Ohio, the promise of more jobs, increased tax revenue, and economic revitalization generated by proposed gambling facilities can be very appealing. But at what costs are the potential benefits of such facilities reaped? Some argue that the introduction of the casino industry in a community may lead to an influx of human trafficking, while others cite gambling addiction and its ramifications as negative outcomes. This paper examines potential effects of Austintown, Ohio's future racino. Highlighting activities of two community organizations, the paper provides insight into how Progressive anti- human trafficking can advance economic justice in America. Lessons learned are presented, along with characteristics of "healthy" economic development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
