Abstract

The article looks at the coexistence between men and women in the Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschlands (SED), which is the communist party of East Germany (RDA), and considers how this party influenced the emancipation of its female members. The evolution of the percentage of women in SED from 1946 to 1988 and the feminization of the party are mentioned. Further topics include the profiles of the party's male and female members including office employees, housewives, and laborers, the promotion of women in a male-dominated party, and the under-representation of women in positions of leadership.
