Abstract

The article looks at the political, diplomatic, and military motivations behind the two stays of Robert d'Anjou, King of Naples, in Provence (Southern France) from July 5, 1309 to mid-June 1310 and from the beginning of May 1319 to April 20, 1324. According to the author, this period provides insight into the beginning and apogee of the King's reign. It is noted that Robert d'Anjou was also the Vicar General for the counties of Provence and Forcalquier (France). His coronation in Avignon, France, on August 3, 1309 under the auspice of Pope Clément V, his late brother Louis d'Anjou, and his administrative reorganizations focusing on Provence's defense and monarchic consolidation during his second stay are also mentioned.
