Abstract

This article discusses the Mexican Inquisition involving José María Lanza, a religious figure who lived during the 18th century. The author comments on Lanza's marriage to a young woman, which violated his oath to the Holy Office. She also examines the ethical implications of Lanza's marriage and the disciplinary actions taken by the Mexican Inquisition. A comparative analysis of two overlapping eras, the Old Regime and the Enlightenment, the latter of which promoted individual freedoms, is also provided.
