Abstract

This article discusses the development of laws and regulations related to the monetary economy and credit in Spain from the 16th century through the 18th centuries. The author comments on the role of the Ordenanzas del Consulado de Bilbao (Consulate of Bilbao Ordinances) in 1737, which established protocol for bankruptcy proceedings. He also considers the legal procedure for both civil and commercial insolvency cases. An analysis of legal documents and archives dating from the disposition of the Cortes of 1458 is also provided.
