Abstract

The article presents research which focuses on Robert Jolivet, Abbot of the Mont Saint-Michel abbey in Mont Saint-Michel, France, from 1411 to 1444. The author argues that in French historiography Jolivet is portrayed as a traitor who deserted the abbey and joined Henri V, King of England, after January 1, 1420. Sources which offer information on Jolivet's management of the abbey are reexamined and arguments against criticism founded upon the hypothesis that the abbot left his abbey to advance his career are presented. The context of the Hundred Years' War which opposed the kingdoms of France and England and Abbot Pierre Le Roy, the advisor to French King Charles VI, to whom Jolivet succeeded are also discussed.
