Abstract

The author discusses how the Hungarian king Mátyás Hunyadi came to be known by the Roman name Matthias Corvinus. The author notes that this name was given to the king by Italian Humanists who in addition gave him a fictitious genealogy dating back to the Roman era. The name, however, only appears in certain contexts, such as in art, panegyrics, building inscriptions and miniatures. The author also notes that the king's successor, his son Johannes Corvinus, also used the name "Corvinus."
