Abstract

The article reports on the prevalence of alopecia in polar bears or Ursus maritimus at the Southern Beaufort Sea. Topics discussed include the effects of hair loss on marine mammals' survival in Arctic conditions, the affected bears also exhibiting exudation and crusted skin lesions and the areas of the bears' bodies affected by alopecia.
