Abstract

The article discusses the use of both lagging and leading indicators in environment, health and safety (EHS) programs. It discusses the shift of the basis of the EHS programs from lagging indicators to leading indicators, the significant role of both indicators in providing information on the status of a health and safety program and how to establish a blended approach that uses leading indicators as well as lagging indicators such as lost time, injury rates and recordable incidence rates.
