Abstract

The article examines the opportunities to lessen mortality after diagnosis of non-small cell lung cancer through surgical resection in New South Wales. Among the reasons cited for not having a resection was the lack of private health insurance, lower socioeconomic status, and older age. Adjusted 5-year death probabilities were noted to be 45% for pneumonectomy, 22% for lobectomy and 76% in absence of resection. An increased in resection was found effective in reducing mortality.
