Abstract

This work deals with the main functions of apocalyptic topoi (commonplaces) in Orthodox Slavonic literature during the Middle Ages. They were derived from a specific normative system inherited by the Slavs from Byzantine literature. Depending on the subject of narration, a medieval author had to choose suitable topoi in order to interpret reality, according to the medieval model of the world. These topoi were essential components of literary memory in the Middle Ages and had the ability to infiltrate the diachrony of culture, because, in spite of changeable historical circumstances, they were able to preserve the main semantic core.
