Abstract
- This article discusses the U.S.-Japan international relationship over 40 years. For the past 40 years leading up to 1989, the U.S. foreign policy has been geared to compete with and contain the Soviet Union; but now the U.S. considers Japan as a greater threat with its growing economic challenge. The author asserts that the economic competition between the U.S. and Japan is already severe and will likely to get worse. To gain a competitive advantage, the U.S. should have a two-part strategy, which includes the need to maintain an alliance with Japan, and a need to regain technological competitiveness.
