Abstract

The article discusses the effects of monopoly in the gas supply industry in view of the supply of gas by Boston Gas Light Co. in Boston, Massachusetts. Some students of modern social and economic conditions viewed that the supply of gas should be kept in monopoly under strict public control. However, later this premise was discarded step by step through logical arguments. Detailed history of gas supply in the city by several companies is presented. The ill effects of monopoly in the industry are discussed. Some useful insights into the political influences in the industry, the role of law and legislation in such cases, and corruption concerning financial health of the business concerns are also presented.
