Abstract

The article focuses on the William III and Mary II's issuance of their own regal coinage for Ireland which consisted of copper half-pennies with the defeat of King James' forces. The currency needs of the Irish was to be met by a mixture of the Irish regal copper coins, devalued gun money, English silver and gold coins. The debacle had left the Irish population wary of any base metal coinage and this was to come to a head in one of the most episodes in the history of Ireland's coinage.
