Abstract

Porous Si<subscript>3</subscript> N<subscript>4</subscript>- Si<subscript>2</subscript> N<subscript>2</subscript> O- BN ceramic was fabricated at 1750°C using Si<subscript>3</subscript> N<subscript>4</subscript>, BN, and ( NH<subscript>4</subscript>)<subscript>2</subscript> HPO<subscript>4</subscript> as starting materials. During the sintering process, oxygen from the decomposed products of ( NH<subscript>4</subscript>)<subscript>2</subscript> HPO<subscript>4</subscript> would bond Si and N in the liquid phase to form Si<subscript>2</subscript> N<subscript>2</subscript> O. The microstructure and properties of the porous ceramics were investigated. With the ( NH<subscript>4</subscript>)<subscript>2</subscript> HPO<subscript>4</subscript> content varied from 10 to 50 vol.%, porosity of the porous Si<subscript>3</subscript> N<subscript>4</subscript>- Si<subscript>2</subscript> N<subscript>2</subscript> O- BN ceramic increased from 43.5% to 51%. The microstructure, mechanical, and dielectric properties was well controlled by adjusting ( NH<subscript>4</subscript>)<subscript>2</subscript> HPO<subscript>4</subscript> contents. The present technique offers a more simple way of synthesizing porous Si<subscript>3</subscript> N<subscript>4</subscript>- Si<subscript>2</subscript> N<subscript>2</subscript> O- BN ceramics.
