Abstract

A gigantic Co<subscript>14</subscript>-containing 36-niobate, Na<subscript>12</subscript>K<subscript>8</subscript>[Co<subscript>14</subscript>(OH)<subscript>16</subscript>(H<subscript>2</subscript>O)<subscript>8</subscript>Nb<subscript>36</subscript>O<subscript>106</subscript>] ⋅71H<subscript>2</subscript>O ( 1), has been prepared by the hydrothermal method and structurally characterized. Polyanion [Co<subscript>14</subscript>(OH)<subscript>16</subscript>(H<subscript>2</subscript>O)<subscript>8</subscript>Nb<subscript>36</subscript>O<subscript>106</subscript>]<superscript>20−</superscript> ( 1 a) comprises a central Co<subscript>7</subscript> core, surrounded by another seven isolated Co<superscript>2+</superscript> ions and six Lindqvist-type (Nb<subscript>6</subscript>O<subscript>19</subscript>) hexaniobate fragments. This is the first example of a high-nuclear cobalt-cluster-containing polyoxoniobate. The photocatalytic H<subscript>2</subscript> evolution activity of Pt-loaded 1 was observed in methanol solution under irradiation using a 300 W Xe lamp. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
