This article describes a technological innovation in metal-halide lightbulbs. Philips Lighting Co. developed a lightbulb that has the ballast built right into the base, addressing previous drawbacks of an external ballast. It is difficult to mass produce this miniature ballast, so the Phillips product would not be commercially available until 1998.
