Examines the role of oratory and poetry in the literary theory of 17th-century French writer and Catholic priest Fénelon. Fénelon's view of poetry and oratory as instruments of similar value in human affairs; Basic principle in Fénelon's conception of the relations between oratory and poetry, as illustrated in his 'Dialogues on Eloquence' and 'Letter to the Academy.'
