Abstract

The article focuses on political developments in the U.S. There were few exciting upsets, threatened horrors did not materialize and little contradicted the sense that the country suffers from a serious deficit of political energy. On September 13, a progressive state legislator in Rhode Island, Myrth York, came from far outside with a grass-roots campaign based in community organizing to beat the incumbent Democrat, Bruce Sundlun, for the gubernatorial nomination. New York hasn't had a woman elected to statewide office in twenty years, but two Republican women are running for top jobs this year. The big news of the night was Marion Barry's resurrection in the District of Columbia mayoralty race.
