Abstract

This article discusses increased advertising revenues in China. As consumer demand in China takes a great leap forward, so does advertising. According to Lynda Graham, boss of Saatchi & Saatchi's China operation, the 1993 advertising spending there rose 42%, in real terms, to nearly $2 billion. Foreign companies are charged a big premium over Chinese companies, plus there's constant pressure to pay bribes in exchange for print space and air time. Then there's the Beijing newspaper that rejected an advertisement submitted by an agency.
