Abstract
- Stroke is the most common cause of acute dysphagia. Dysphagia is associated with poor prognosis due to the high risk of undernutrition and pneumonia, and it has a major impact on quality of life and requirements for nursing home care. This article reviews current evidence underpinning interventions for dysphagia in acute stroke, comments on ongoing research and provides practical advice for the management of people with acute stroke and dysphagia.
