Abstract

Regardless of the outcome of the November 17 U.S. House vote on the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the battle over the treaty has provided a clear view of the ongoing fragmentation and reformation of American politics. The push for NAFTA is part of Corporate America's ongoing campaign to dominate public decision-making, the resistance to it represents a temporary coming together of all those disfranchised by that process. The NAFTA vote tells where the current balance of forces lies, it does not end the struggle.
