Abstract

Compares Ronald Reagan and George Bush, and notes that the real surprise, given both their backgrounds, that Reagan was more flexible abroad and more attentive at home than Bush. Reagan had more civility and while his rhetoric was simplistic it was not mean. The three main areas of Bush's failure were foreign policy (no reconsideration of America's role in the post-cold war world), the economy (his fatal no-new-taxes pledge), culture (obstruction rather than argument).
