Abstract

Raises questions about the process of suburbanization and the experience of the immigrant working class in early-twentieth-century North American cities, focusing on the city of North Earlscourt, a suburb of Toronto that was settled mainly by working-class immigrants from Britain, who helped one another in building their own houses through formal subcontracting and informal exchange.
